BACKGROUND
With the collapse of central government of Somalia and subsequent start of the civil war, the political and administrative structures disappeared in Somalia where anarchy and rules of warlords prevailed. The basic social services also did not exist for the past three years for which the Somali society suffered heavily.
Based on these real needs of the society, a group of Somali intellectuals and development practitioners both from Diaspora and from within Somalia established Somali Welfare Society (SWS) in 1993. It is a member of the umbrella NGO networks in the region and it has five branches in the main regional administrative centers of Puntland with its head office located in Garowe, the capital of Puntland. A Board of Directors (BOD) consisting of 15 members oversees the performance of the organization, while a management team runs its day-to-day affairs. SWS received integrated institutional capacity building training from Care International as well as from other INGOs and UN agencies.
Establishment and Identification:
About us
We care children orphanage is a registered Nonprofit, Our grounds are located in Garowe and Galkaio District,
Puntland, Somalia
SWS was established in 1993 by a group of Somali intellectuals to contribute to the efforts of community development in Somalia and to assure the activities of this organization are being done in accordance to its guiding principles. Thus the major objective of the NGO is to facilitate and help community to have access to all basic social services and help community achieve their own development goals.
SWS is a non-political, non-governmental, non-profit, community-cantered and action- oriented organization operating in the regions of Puntland State of Somalia.
It is established by the community and for the community. It attaches great value on the principle of participation and community ownership.
We have succeeded in helping more children in need who otherwise would not have hope for tomorrow. Many of them became community leaders, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs.
Right now, we provide food, some with shelter and more general welfare, and some actually go to different schools. We continue to seek care for every child in our care, making sure they have a healthy life, good education, school materials, clothing, medical care and other needs.
We also work with children at risk. These are the kids who were either street boys, (homeless) girls or kids
who, due to poverty or abuse, would not receive an education without outside assistance. SWS helps in these cases and gives them the education that they deserve and in most cases would never receive.
Objectives:
To provide shelter, care for the abandoned and orphaned and most vulnerable children in a stable and safe living environment.
To protect and promote the health and welfare of children and nurture their overall growth and development, including their physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs, allowing them to grow and develop to their full potential.
To encourage the development of responsibility and self-esteem of the children in our care.
To ensure children are protected from any form of abuse, discrimination, slavery and cruel punishment. SWS does not condone any form of corporal punishment.
To enable children to grow within a caring, compassion environment and have access to essential services such as health and education and shelter.
